Legal Notice Regarding Smart Irrigation Controllers

Smart Irrigation Controllers (“SICs”)

October 4, 2021

This is a legal notice from the Village of Sands Point pursuant to Chapter 137 of the Village Code regarding Smart Irrigation Controllers ("SICs"). SICs will replace traditional irrigation clocks as they are connected to the internet and receive weather forecasts and recent weather history.

Saltwater intrusion into the Village’s wells is a long-term threat to the Village’s ability to provide water for lawn irrigation. Smart Irrigation Controllers will help prevent irrigation before, during, and after rainstorms, protect our wells from overconsumption, and reduce potential long-term impacts from saltwater intrusion. Furthermore, the NYS DEC (Dept of Environmental Conservation) has directed water districts to reduce their water consumption by 15%.

As such, in accordance with a law passed by the Village in early 2021 (Chapter 137 of the Village Code), the Village requires that SICs be installed on all properties before May 1, 2022, the beginning of the Spring 2022 irrigation season.

We urge you to act now to be in compliance and avoid the risk of penalties, which can be as high as $250/day. It may be efficient and more economical to do so when your irrigation service provider is closing your system for the season before the ground freezes.

You will be required to send a copy of your purchase receipt to water@sandspoint.org or send to Village Hall, 26 Tibbits Lane. (If you have already installed one and submitted your receipt to the Village, you may ignore this message.)
